Altcoin

Ethan Reeves · 2026-08-19 · 5 min read

Altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin — the term is short for “alternative coin” and covers thousands of digital currencies including Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Solana, Tron, and many others.

Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, so everything that came after is broadly labelled an altcoin. Each one runs on its own blockchain with its own rules, transaction speeds, and fee structures. Some altcoins were built to improve on Bitcoin’s limitations — faster confirmations, lower fees, or smart-contract functionality — while others were created for specific ecosystems or communities. The result is a wide spectrum of coins ranging from well-established assets with billions in market value to obscure tokens with thin liquidity.

For crash-gambling players, altcoins matter because many crash sites accept deposits and withdrawals in multiple cryptocurrencies. Paying with an altcoin like Litecoin or Tron can mean near-instant transactions and fees that are a fraction of a cent, which is useful when you want to top up your balance quickly or cash out without waiting. Ethereum is another popular option, though its fees can spike during periods of high network activity. Always check which altcoins a site supports before funding your account, since availability varies widely between platforms.

There is one important caveat: altcoin values are volatile, sometimes more so than Bitcoin. If you deposit in an altcoin and the price drops sharply while you are playing, your effective bankroll in real-world terms shrinks even if your on-site balance looks the same. Conversely, a price rise works in your favour. Players who prefer to avoid this exposure often convert to a stablecoin before depositing, though not all crash sites support stablecoins. Understanding the altcoin you are using — its typical confirmation time, current network fees, and price behaviour — is basic due diligence before you start playing.

  • Common altcoins accepted at crash sites: Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Solana (SOL), Tron (TRX)
  • Key advantage: Lower fees and faster settlement compared to Bitcoin on many networks
  • Key risk: Price volatility can change the real value of your balance mid-session
